One of the founders of the current wind energy sector is Andrew Garrad, an engineer and businessman born in Braunston, England, on November 8, 1953. Dr. Garrad has spent nearly 40 years working in the wind energy industry. In 1971, he created his first wind turbine.

In 1984, Taylor Woodrow, British Aerospace, and the General Electric Company (GEC) were three partners in the R&D project known as the Wind Energy Group. Andrew Garrad and Unsal Hassan had been employed by the Wind Energy Group for the previous five years, starting in 1979. The two wind industry pioneers decided to launch their own business after becoming convinced of the sector’s potential and that it had reached a stage of development where it was time to move beyond research and commercialize their work. To start what has grown to be the largest wind-energy consulting firm in the world, they negotiated office space at a university in exchange for teaching a few classes when they had no clients yet.

The two men’s personalities and backgrounds were complementary, with the jovial Garrad excellent at creating mathematical models and the more reflective Hassan leaning toward creating measurement systems. They focused on two areas: developing techniques for estimating and forecasting wind farm output and constructing the code to determine turbine performance. Today, this is still employed in the company’s well-known GH Bladed integrated design software package.

The deregulation of the UK electricity market in 1990, which opened a call for wind farms and necessitated the kind of technical examination and contribution the company could offer, was the first of two events that changed the company’s trajectory. The other was the arrival of the country’s first sizable utility-scale wind farms a few years later, with the company serving as the bank’s or owner’s engineer due to its leadership in wind-farm consulting. Soon after, the UK wind market virtually collapsed, which gave the business new impetus. In 2009, the business underwent another change when it combined with Germanischer Lloyd to form GL Garrad Hassan, the GL Group’s renewable energy consulting branch.

Following the 2009 merger of Germanischer Lloyd (GL) and Garrad Hassan, Dr. Garrad was appointed President of GL Garrad Hassan. Before becoming Chairman in 2012, he managed the startup business. He joined the DNV GL – Energy Supervisory Board following the merger of DNV and GL at the former Group President and CEO Henrik Madsen’s invitation.

He previously served as the Chairman of the British Wind Energy Association, and from 2013 to 2014. He also served as President of the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA).

He oversaw Bristol’s 2015 campaign to become the European Green Capital. He received the Poul la Cour prize from the Hellenic Wind Energy Association for the first time in 2006 and the Eolus medal from the same organization in 2015, making him the sole non-Greek recipient. The Queen’s Award for International Enterprise was won by GH twice while he was in charge. Clearly, Garrad was well on his way to becoming one of the modern energy innovators.

A 2009 honorary DEng degree from the University of Bristol was given to Dr. Garrad. He also holds a BA from the University of Oxford and a PhD from the University of Exeter. He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and the Royal Academy of Engineering. Lastly, he is a New College, Oxford, Honorary Fellow. He has resided in Long Ashton, his family’s home, for five generations. He is married and has four grown-up children.
